Grand Rapids Business Journal: Deb DeGraaf Values Family at DeGraaf Interiors

Note: The following article ran on May 20 in the Grand Rapids Business Journal.

Editor’s note: Each issue of the Influential Women enewsletter will feature a profile of one of the Business Journal’s reigning Top Women Owned Businesses finalists. The profile first appeared in the event program.

For Deb DeGraaf – owner and president of DeGraaf Interiors, a residential and commercial flooring and carpet business with three West Michigan locations – her education in the industry began at her father Daryll’s side.

DeGraaf Interiors was a finalist for the 2013 Top Women Owned Business award in the $7 million and up revenue category.

“I have been a part of DeGraaf Interiors for 15 years, ever since I began helping my father with paperwork shortly after he opened DeGraaf Interiors in 1993. After some time working in the industry, I began selling on the showroom floor and managing our sales staff. And when my father retired in 2006, I began purchasing the business and have been president ever since.”

DeGraaf Interiors remains very much a family business, however.

“As the majority owner of DeGraaf Interiors, I am proud to say that without the help of my business partner and brother, Dean DeGraaf, we would not be where we are today,” she said. “He provides a balance of skills and expertise that I alone could not. As a mother of two young children, there are days the business has to wait, and Dean, along with the rest of my team, allows me to do what I love most ? be a mom.”

That attitude also shapes DeGraaf’s management style.

“The people that work alongside me in this business are my family at heart,” she said. “I create an environment at all three of our stores that is productive and yet fun. As long as you love what you do and who you work with, productivity and life are so much easier.”

DeGraaf Interiors New Store Featured by WZZM

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM)- As four area stores close, one Grand Rapids business is expanding by adding a third location. DeGraaf Interiors, Floors & More put up the sign for its East Paris store this week. The site was once home to a men’s clothing store. It is also near Daniel’s and Rogers Bill & Tall which are both closing.

The DeGraaf family has been in business since 1993. Store owner Deb DeGraaf says, “We have diversified over the last couple, two three years and that’s helped our business tremendously. With the down economy, and building hasn’t been as abundant, so we’ve done a lot of commercial work. We’ve done a lot of work in the downtown Grand Rapids area.”

DeGraaf Interiors Opens Third Store

Published: Monday, November 29, 2010, 11:00 AM

With many local businesses – including competitors in design and sales – struggling to survive, DeGraaf Interiors, based in Hudsonville, has opened a third store at 1144 East Paris Ave. in Cascade.

“We feel extremely blessed to be growing in these economic times,” said owner Deb DeGraaf, who credits her staff with the ability to expand. “So much of the reason we can do this is that my brother and I have a staff we can trust, so I could come out here and pour my passion into the new store.”

The showroom will be the first Shaw Design Center in West Michigan and features all the services that the Hudsonville and Plainfield Avenue locations have offered since 1963. In addition, DeGraaf Interiors is an authorized Mohawk ColorCenter dealer and Stainmaster Flooring Centers dealer, offering a complete line of products for carpet, hardwood, laminate, vinyl, ceramic, and countertops as well as “green” products and finishing touches.

DeGraaf Gives Back

At DeGraaf Interiors it’s important to us to give back to our community.  In our effort to support local Christian schools we have run a number of fund raisers.  We believe family is important and we try our best to make buying flooring fun for the children who visit our store with their parents.
